Neptune and Company, Inc. designed a cost effective, practical design of a field effort to identify the munitions response areas (MRAs) at this 64,000 acre site. We optimized transect spacing via probabilistic simulations to ensure adequate probability of encountering fragments at densities indicative of the smallest rounds used on site. We also optimized transect segment length to effectively reduce the number of digs required to spatially define MRA boundaries. We facilitated interactions with the client and the regulator and obtained full regulator acceptance of the optimized design. As a result of this design, we succeeded in reducing the number of digs by 14,000, and defined MRA boundaries that reduced the footprint of areas requiring further investigation by 60%. Tools developed at Camp Beale are readily applicable to designing remedial investigations at other sites.
